Christian UnionChristian Unions encourage Christian young people to live out their faith at school and inspire them to be salt and light in their school communities.

They support teenagers in the knowledge that they are not alone in their faith, and help to establish Christian community in the place where these young people spend much of their time!

They create unity between young people from different churches and youth groups as they work together as the Body of Christ in their school.

They are a great way to build up young people in their faith!

They are also a place where young people of all religious backgrounds are welcomed into a community by friends who want to share their faith, and where ideas and beliefs can be shared and discussed without judgement. One group organised an extremely popular series of debates about various aspects of Christianity.

Many of York’s secondary schools have Christian Unions (usually aimed at upper school and sixth form, but some for all ages) and YoYo offers support to these groups in a variety of ways.

YoYo regularly visits and supports the running of CU groups at six schools:

Archbishop Holgate's
CU Years 9-13 Friday 12.10-1.10
Bootham "CUtting Edge" Years 7-13
Tuesday 12.40-1.20
Fulford CU Years 10-13 Tuesday 1.30-2.10
Huntington CU Years 10-13 Tuesday 12.30-1.30
Joseph Rowntree "Deeper" Years 7-11 Thursday 1.10-2
York College CU Wednesday 12.35-2

We also have links with the CU ("Cross-Keys") at St Peter's School.

Every CU is different, but all serve to support the young people in living out their Christian faith at school. Some have a focus on evangelism, running sessions using Youth Alpha, organising debates or putting on events to invite their friends to.

One group recently distributed encouraging bookmarks throughout the college during exam time, and gave out lollipops with Bible verses attached at their Freshers’ stall. Others focus more on discipleship, running Bible studies to build up and challenge the Christian young people at school or college. Often these sessions are led by the young people themselves with our support, serving to equip them in leadership skills.
