Open The BookOpen the Book is a national assembly scheme which is running in a number of primary schools around York, offering primary school children an opportunity to hear the major stories of the Bible as part of a three year rolling programme.

The Open the Book work is coordinated by Carol and Anna at YoYo, but is made possible through the commitment of the many volunteers who work in small teams in each of the local schools. These teams visit their school once a week and deliver a Bible story using colourful props and creative story telling techniques.

This simple assembly scheme is proving to be a big hit with the children and their teachers. The stories entertain, educate and often capture the imagination of many of the children who look forward to their telling each week.

There are currently eight local schools who take part in this scheme through YoYo. Here is what one school thinks of the programme:

It is a real pleasure to welcome the York Youth Trust volunteers who have become part of our team at  Clifton Green School. The “Open the Book” volunteers arrive each week to read and act out Bible stories. These are really enjoyed by the children and staff. The festival assemblies and lessons Yo Yo present each term are equally welcomed. “Love thy neighbour” is a very strong feature in these well loved assemblies in which everyone at the school gets so much from the experience, particularly because the time enables us all to reflect upon ourselves and our friendships with each other.
